The first batch of erectile dysfunction pills for sale is available to men with low sexual desire, said the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in a news release.
Pfizer Inc. said the new product will contain 50mg of Viagra, the active ingredient for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
The product, which is sold under the brand name, is a treatment for the most common male sexual disorder – impotence.
It was the first in a range of new products that has been tested, including:
New products will now be available in two doses of 25mg and 50mg, said the MHRA.
The tablets are expected to cost between £3 and £5 per pill, depending on the order, said the MHRA.
The products are aimed at men who are experiencing difficulties achieving or maintaining an erection which lasts for more than 4 hours, such as the elderly.
Men taking the medicines will be able to buy the medicines in shops and pharmacies without having to visit a doctor.
The products will be available to all in two doses of 25mg and 50mg, said the MHRA.
The tablets will be taken 30 minutes before sex, but can last for up to 4 hours. The tablets will be available in the NHS pharmacy in England, and all patients can now purchase them from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency website, after completing an online consultation.
The products have been found to be safe, effective and non-hormonal in their effect.
The medicines have been available on the NHS for the last 14 years, with many patients reporting no problems in taking them.
The medicines will be available to all people with erectile dysfunction who have not previously had it under a doctor’s care, as long as they are at least 16 years old.
The drugs are also available to anyone who wants to reduce the chances of having a heart attack, or a prostate operation.
“Erectile dysfunction is a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide and is one of the leading causes of disability,” said the MHRA in the news release.
